The Alps around Grenoble contain some of the most famous climbs in the world. The lower climbs of the range include the horribly steep Col Luitel, and the undulating route along the Balcon de Belledonne running from Allevard to Uriage, a road that runs under the high peaks of the Belledonne range. Then there are the Alpine giants, the Col de la Croix de Fer, the Col de la Madeleine and the Col du Galibier where the air is thin and the climbs are long.
The views are always stunning, from the peaks and glaciers of the Ecrins massif to the lakes and woods of the Col de la Croix de Fer.
In the summer, a constant stream of cyclists can be found cycling up the 21 hairpins to Alpe d'Huez. It's a fantastic atmosphere! The tourist office at the top will give you a certificate to prove that you have climbed the mountain, and it really is accessible for everybody from the competant cyclist to the six year old boy in his Telecom kit climbing with his father, and the Dutch couple who had their dog sat in the basket of their shopper bike. They were there in 1999.
The following map illustrates the major climbs and roads of the Alpine region around Grenoble.
