The limestone massif of the Chartreuse is one of the most beautiful areas around Grenoble. Stretching north to Chambery, the two main routes into the massif from Grenoble climb over the Col du Porte and the Col du Coq. The summits of the pre-alpine mountains reach out of wooded valleys, and the famous gorges of Guiers Vif and Guiers Mort make this area a must on anybodies itinery. Only a few of the peaks in the range reach over 2000m, including the two highest, the Dent de Crolles (2062m) and Chamchaude (2082m).
The road to the Chalets du Charmant Son (1650m), just off the top of the Col du Porte gives one of the most impressive views of the range with the high Alpine peaks of the Belledonne set behind to the east.
The following map details the principal routes and climbs of the Chartreuse massif.

The Chartreuse has been a national park since 1995, and is an area rich in wildlife.
